I've also tried entering the code by using slui. Better option in this case is to move to using a Windows Server DataCenter host so you can make use of AVMA, the other option is to use a valid product key to activate the guest. If the host where you are using windows Server DataCenter were a hyper-v host then you could make use of AVMA product keys for guest activation.
In your case VMWare as hypervisor in order to activate the Server guest you can use any valid Server product key for activation purposes. Activation keys are version specific. But don't mix up licenses with activation keys. Can get the evaluation ISO for via Microsoft's site.
